Review: Gmarket Haul

11:15

As my previous post stated, I will keep exploring websites to purchase K-Beauty products and this time round I tried Gmarket. What is Gmarket? It is basically like ebay but it is from Korea. Other than cosmetics and skincare, it does sell a wide range of product, from electrical appliances to home deco or even food and so much more (it actually resembles TaoBao a lot).

If to compare with Taobao, the good thing is that you doesnt need an Alipay account nor an agent(which the agent would charge you a certain rate base on the amount you purchase). All you need is a Paypal account(definitely easy to create one) or it works even better if you have credit card. You dont need a middleman in Korea (for the case of Taobao, the middleman is in China) to help you collect all the items and later help you to ship back to your own country. Gmarket has its own warehouse to help you collect all the items you purchased from various seller and later ship to your country.

However, the downside is that, Gmarket only have two options for shipping, which is EMS and SF Express. SF Express is only available for China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Macau and Singapore. Customers from other countries will have no other options but EMS. EMS is very pricey and the rate goes higher and higher according to the weight of your items. The cost of shipping with EMS is the main reason that I have always avoid purchasing from Gmarket because buying only a cushion foundation might have cost me a kg already and the shipping cost goes up ridiculously high with each additional item.

Also not all items are available for international buyers. If the items are not in the international shipping list, then the items are not eligible to ship outside of Korea. If you mistakenly purchase items that are not eligible for international shipping, you cannot ship it back to your country. So always click the international shipping button to check for items that are eligible to ship back to your country.

13 items and I got such a big box. Imagine the shipping cost.

Just like purchasing from TaoBao, Gmarket collected all the items from different sellers and they just put everything into a bigger box. They will not discard the box from the sellers and keep the shipping box small. That is why the weight for the shipping box can go up in an instant with just a few items. When I get the parcel, it was written that the parcel was weight as 3.96kg(freaking heavy for a parcel).
7 small parcel from different sellers inside the big shipping box.

The shipping fee just sounds so scary! But fear not, because now they are having a PROMOTION! Gmarket is now charging a flat rate of ‎₩5000 (RM18++) regardless how heavy is the parcel. That is the only reason why I dare to order it this time round, else a parcel weight 3.96kg gonna make my wallet bleed! This promotion is gonna last till 31st May 2016 and after that they will charge according to weight again. So anyone wanna try grabbing things from Gmarket, please act fast! Though this promotion is only applicable to Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam.

About the website, although it is in English/Chinese, but not all products description are in English. Most of the items' description are in Korean, even the options given to choose before adding to cart are also in Korean. If you doesnt understand a single Korean word, then you will be having a really hard time to google what are the items available in the options given(here comes google translate to the rescue).

Other than the language issue, the platform, the efficiency and the system are fairly good and easy to navigate. Gmarket has an attendance check list (or lucky draw) which you can spin to earn points and stamps (or even coupon) which it can be handy if you collect enough points or stamps. Gmarket often distributes coupons which can make your purchase cheaper if you fulfill the t&c of the coupons.

Now lets check at the timeline:
Order placed: 31st March
Confirmed payment made: 31st March

Conclusion:

Pros:

2. Different sellers may offer different discounts. May get better deal if spend more time to check on different sellers.
3. Gmarket offers coupons from time to time.
4. Fast shipping.
5. Fresh manufacture items.
6. Fast and helpful response from Gmarket team when you have any inquiry.

Cons:
1. Language used in product description and options are in korean. It will be very hard for buyers to understand if they do not know how to read korean.
2. Shipping fee is very costly when there is not promotion on shipping fee.
3. Less shipping method to be choose.

Rating: 4.6/5
Repurchase? Yes, whenever the shipping fee is on promotion, else I wont because the shipping fee might cost even higher than the items I purchased.

    1. I heard the benchmark is actually RM400, not RM500. It is a bit risky to go over RM400. For this haul, it costs around RM370++. During the shipping period, it took quite some time to get off from custom inspection (usually would only take 1-2days,but this parcel was there for 4 days). Luckily by the end, it was being released without any charge of tax. So I think it is better to keep the amount below RM400.

    2. Hi dear. I just ordered from gmarket and opted to SF Express as the cost a bit cheaper compare to EMS. But after order been placed i read many reviews that SF Express werent recommended by many ppl as they so lousy and such a pain in the ass in terms of services. I just wonder.. Should i still proceed my order with SF or request to change to EMS. My order was just from 1 seller.. I think the parcel wont be so huge like yours 😁😁

  3. Hi, I've recently purchased from Gmarket as well but my parcel got detained by Pharmacy Malaysia. I was required to write in an appeal letter and lucky for me, I've got my parcel back.

Just wondering, did your parcel got detained by Pharmacy Malaysia?

    1. Hi. My parcel didnt get detain by Pharmacy Malaysia, but this parcel was back in April. Maybe recently Malaysia custom checking is a bit strict. What is the total value of your parcel? It is such a relieved that you are able to retrieve it back.

  4. HI there...Recently im checking the gmarket website..The item quit cheap than other web or seller. But Im just worried about the shipping cost to Malaysia and gmarket also offer shipping price 5000won to Malaysia on any weight..Is the shipoing cost at any weight will be the same or they will charge th shipping cost later?

    1. I think the 5000won shipping offer is seasonal. Because back in Year 2015 or earlier months of Year 2016, the shipping fee is still charged according to weight. You might want to act fast if the shipping fee is still 5000won regardless the weight as it might change anytime. :)

    1. The offer was end at 9am, 23rd of June (Korea Time). Too bad the shipping offer has ended. T^T
I am not sure how often they have this promo cause I have been checking Gmarket for a very long time but it only happened since March 2016. Maybe you can create an account in Gmarket and send them request asking for the offer to be back? who knows if high demand, then they will offer again. besides, they might send you the updates via email?

  6. Hi do u think i should buy from qoo10 instead of gmarket to avoid custom?

    1. Hi Eyah. As far as I know, Singapore's Qoo10 was originally Gmarket. But I am not quite sure for Malaysia's Qoo10. Personally I have trust issue with Malaysia's Qoo10 because some sellers offer prices that are way too low as compare to Korea. Unlike Gmarket, most of the sellers are official brands setting up a visual store in Gmarket itself.
Also, some of the items in Qoo10 ships from Korea as well, thus if custom really wanted to charge on it, it will still be taxed. As far as I have purchased quite some time from Gmarket, I didnt experience any custom detained and tax. I think it is alright as long as you didnt purchase the amount overboard or any items that is not legalized in Malaysia.
Hope this answer your question. :)

  7. Hi! I would like to purchased item from gmarket. The estimate shipping cost is W10300. But the problem worried is that is they only can confirm the actual shipping cost when the items send to the warehouse. How about when they send to warehouse and said that my parcel is much much more heavy and iIneed to top up for the shipping cost? If iIcancelled the order still need to pay for the domestic shipping fees. I feel so not secure and fair to us. Do u have such experience?

    1. Previously when I ordered, the shipping offer was fixed regardless how much it weight. Thus I did not encountered this issue. However I do take note on the difference of estimated weight and actual weight. From my experience, the weight difference never exceed 2kg (sometimes even lighter). I think to top up 2kg of shipping fee is still within reasonable range. But of course, it depends on the item you purchase.

  8. Thanks for reply. I am totally new in G market. They are having 50% shipping cost on sept but 1kg still cost w6800.

    1. Which country are you shipping to?
1kg for W6800 is fairly cheap if compare to other online korean beauty websites.

  9. Hi, I just checked g-market. According to the cart, even if I bought two items from the same shop, but each will be charged at 2500W respectively. Even what I'm trying to purchase is just small tubes of hair dye. Unlike Taobao, which will charge one flat rate from same shop, and then international shipping by kg. So sounds g-market charging rate is pretty expensive since it's just a small items.
